About the Show
The 42nd annual Rock and Gem Show and Sale, Everything Rocks!, took place October 14 and 15, 2023 at Kyle Centre in Port Moody.
It had been four years since the club's previous show in 2019. As the first of three post-COVID revival shows, Everything Rocks! was deliberately broad in scope, reintroducing the community to the many sides of the lapidary hobby and encouraging a new generation of members to discover the club.
Displays explored lapidary work, rocks and minerals, geology, fossils, faceting and collecting. New attractions were introduced alongside familiar show traditions, helping make the club's return to Kyle Centre both a celebration of its past and the beginning of a renewed period of growth.
The 2023 show was the club's first annual show since 2019 and began a three-show post-COVID revival period that continued through 2024 and 2025.
The returning show became the highest-grossing annual show in club history to that point, excluding the external grant received for the 2017 150 Rocks project, and helped attract a new group of members to the club.
Featured Exhibits & Guests
- A broad introduction to lapidary. After a four-year absence, the club chose a general theme designed to showcase the many different aspects of the hobby. Displays introduced visitors to lapidary work, rocks and minerals, geology, fossils, faceting and collecting, with the goal of encouraging new people to become involved with the club.
- Fluorescent Minerals. A new fluorescent mineral tent, allowing visitors to see minerals react under ultraviolet light. The collection has also been used for public education at mining-related events and AME Discovery Day.
- Barbie Rocks! The Danneffel Family's playful display brought together pink rocks, mineral specimens and resin pours in a Barbie-inspired presentation. The case was subsequently entered at the 2024 BC Gem Show, where it received the People's Choice Award. It marked the second time a Port Moody club member received the award, following Elaine Thompson in 1996.
